1995年にデビューして以来、北陸本線の看板特急として君臨し続けているのが、この681系「サンダーバード」です。1995年から2018年までの姿です。デビュー当時は「スーパー雷鳥(サンダーバード)」というやたら長い名前で、当時130キロ運転を行う「スーパー雷鳥」の一翼としての活躍でしたが、1997年には独立した「サンダーバード」としての運用につきました。魅力はなんと言っても高速運転にあり、それまで湖西線のみの130キロ運転を全区間までに拡大させ、さらにはほくほく線内では160キロ運転も可能とさせました。湖西線や北陸トンネルでの160キロ運転も可能とされていますが、現在まで実現はされていません。運用は「サンダーバード」の他に、「しらさぎ」「びわこエクスプレス」などなど多岐に渡ります。特に人気があったのは、1997年に開業した北越急行経由で金沢と越後湯沢を結んだJR西日本持ちの「はくたか」としての運用です。登場時は専用の485系とともに運用についていましたが、2002年に683系を増備した際に485系を追い出し、すべて681系のみの運用になりました。北越急行ほくほく線内では狭軌最高速度の時速160キロ運転を可能とし、関東と北陸を結ぶエースとして活躍しました。のちに北越急行の2000番台や683系8000番台との混結も見られるようになりました。かつては「スーパー雷鳥立山（サンダーバード）」「スーパー雷鳥宇奈月（サンダーバード）」として富山地方鉄道に乗り入れていましたが、勾配がきつく車両故障が多発したり、利用率も低迷した為、1999年に廃止されました。編成は基本6両と付属3両で、最長は9両編成。1992年に製造された試作車のみ貫通9両編成でしたが、後に分割されています。2001年に登場した後継機とも言える683系と共通運用を持ち、編成単位での混結も良く行われており、...
